Imaginarium – Lakewood, CA

A Magical Light Experience with a Few Real-Life

Located in Lakewood, California, Imaginarium transforms what used to be a Forever 21 into a massive indoor light experience and honestly, the creativity alone is impressive.

From the moment you walk in, it feels like stepping into a glowing dream.

There’s a room filled with twinkling sunflowers. An immersive balloon space where hundreds of balloons swirl around you (imagine standing in a shower of balloons without them popping). Interactive lantern stations where you can decorate and release glowing lights into water. Mist-filled walkways. Hanging installations. Every corner invites you to touch, explore, pretend, and take photos.

My kids had an absolute blast. Even days later, we were still talking about the lights and the fun.

It gives theme park energy, there’s indoor and outdoor walking, lots of movement, and minimal sitting unless you’re taking photos or soaking in the moment.

Now let’s talk practical mom tips.

This is a highly interactive space. Things hang from the ceiling. Installations brush against your hair and skin. Kids will want to touch everything. Bring hand sanitizer or wipes. Visit the restroom and wash hands immediately after. Be mindful of little ones touching their faces or putting things near their mouths.

There’s mist in certain areas, and you’re in a relatively enclosed space, so if your child has allergies, take that into consideration.

Dress comfortably. Think Sky Zone vibes, be cute but practical. It gets warm inside, so no heavy jackets needed. I’d skip a purse and opt for a backpack so your hands stay free.

Now, my honest critiques.

Near the restroom area, there was a noticeable mildew smell 🙁likely connected to the mist machine. It was strong enough to stand out and could become an issue if not properly maintained. That part was disappointing.

There was also an outdoor section where something from the ceiling dripped onto me, revealing a large puddle on the ground in a dark area. That could have easily caused someone to slip and fall, especially a child. I immediately alerted staff, but it’s something that should be monitored more closely.

So here’s my breakdown:

✨ Imagination & creativity: 9/10

✨ Overall experience: 8/10

⚠️ Maintenance concerns (smell & puddle): 4/10

Despite the hiccups, it was still a wonderful family experience.

Imaginarium taps into something we don’t nurture enough…imagination. That part of childhood that teaches us to dream, create, and believe beyond what we see.

And for that alone, it’s worth experiencing at least once.

Would we go again?

Yes, but with sanitizer in hand and eyes open. ☺️
