Choosing the Moment: When Intentional Living Slows Everything Down

Sometimes the most meaningful moments aren’t planned, they’re chosen.

Yesterday, my ex-husband came and removed the last of his things from the storage closet.

I cleared out all the remaining clutter and junk, keeping only what I needed.

What was once cluttered… became open.

And instead of waiting for it to be perfect or “picture ready,” I decided to use it anyway.

This morning, I laid down a soft blanket, made breakfast, and my daughter and I sat outside on the patio together.

We ate.

We laughed.

We enjoyed the moment.

It wasn’t fancy.

But it was intentional.

And that changed everything.

Later, we went to the park and met another mom.

As our daughters played, we started talking. She shared how overwhelmed she’s been, and how she feels like she’s doing everything on her own.

She said something that stayed with me:

She feels like a single married mother.

And in that moment I totally understood her.

But as we talked, I also realized something deeper,

it wasn’t just about help…

It was about rest.

I asked her,

“Do you rest?”

Not just sleep.

Not just collapsing at the end of the day.

But intentional rest.

The kind where you choose to pause… even when things still need to be done.

I told her:

When there’s a moment of peace

don’t rush to the next task.

Sit down.

Breathe.

Be still.

Because the dishes will still be there.

The laundry will still be there.

But that moment?

That moment won’t.

And then I gently challenged her…

Maybe part of the frustration isn’t just that her husband rests,

but that she doesn’t feel like she can.

As mothers, we can get so used to being busy that we forget how to just be.

We move from one thing to the next.

We carry everything.

We show up for everyone.

And then we wonder why we feel overwhelmed and exhausted.

But the truth is…

Intentional living requires intentional pauses.

This morning, I didn’t have to create that moment.

I could have stayed inside.

Kept it simple.

Did what was easy.

But I chose differently.

I chose to slow down.

I chose to be present.

I chose the moment.

And without even trying…

I lived out the very thing I later spoke into someone else’s life.

You don’t have to wait for everything to be perfect to enjoy your life.

You don’t have to earn rest.

You don’t have to finish everything before you pause.

You just have to choose the moment.
